Chapter Fourteen

Cruz waltzed in, as carefree and attention commanding as usual.

Knox checked the driveway for signs of additional Winchesters before locking the door behind him, because his family typically traveled in packs. Satisfied his brother was alone, he followed him to the kitchen.

“Mornin’, Jordans,” Cruz said, waving to Jen on his way to make silly faces at D.J.

“Good morning,” Jen replied, glancing at Knox with a grin.

“Breakfast sure smells good,” Cruz noted, taking a seat beside the high chair. “I’ve been up since before dawn. Barely had more than coffee.” He patted the flat stomach he was eternally proud of, then shook a monkey-shaped teether for D.J.

Knox rolled his eyes, already arranging a fresh plate for the interloper. He watched Jen for her reaction. She wasn’t part of the family now, but if there was hope of her sticking around long-term, she’d have to deal with his family’s nosy, pushy, loving but ever-present ways.

“Were you just in the neighborhood?” Jen asked, smiling as he entertained her baby.

“Just checking in,” Cruz said.

Knox ferried the full plate to his brother.

Cruz straightened, abandoning the teether at the sight of fresh fruit salad and their auntie’s casserole. “You always know exactly what I need.”

“You literally told me you hadn’t eaten,” Knox countered, taking his seat at the table.

Jen laughed softly as Cruz dug in. Her soft, warm expression at the men’s exchange spread across the space to his heart.

“Anything new on the case?” Knox asked, redirecting his attention to Cruz. “My phone’s been oddly quiet since last night.”

Cruz shook his head. “Not much. I stopped by the sheriff’s department to deliver some findings on another case this morning, then asked around about the car accident and Madison while I was there. Mechanics confirmed the car was sabotaged. There was a clear slice to the brake line, nothing that would likely happen in the course of natural use or wear and tear. Also some damage to the steering column. Together, the issues would’ve made it tough to steer and impossible to slow down by the time she reached the fatal intersection.”

Jen set her fork aside with a clatter. “Her driving was exponentially erratic as we followed. I thought she was just getting more upset.”

Cruz bobbed his head. “That was probably true too.”

Jen cringed, and Knox stifled the urge to cover her hand with his.

“I’m headed over to the clinic from here,” Cruz said. “A couple deputies are planning to conduct interviews today. I figured I’d hang around, see who comes and goes. Stake the place out. Pose as a patient. Maybe overhear something of use.”

Knox nodded. “I like that idea. Any chance Derek has time to get in on this?”

“He’s busy.” Cruz smiled. “Taking a look around Katie’s house as we speak.” Cruz stuffed another forkful of food into his mouth.

“Who’s Derek?” Jen asked.

“My partner,” Cruz said, as Knox answered, “Our cousin.”

“He’s a bit of a snoop and a fantastic lock-picker,” Cruz added, sounding proud as usual.

Knox offered his usual, wholly ignored, warning look.
